19century AD
Short Description The church belongs to the architectural style of the single-aisled basilica with a pitched roof and a later narthex. The exact date of rebuilding is not known but the architectural formal characteristics place the building in the 19th century. On the linter of the main entrance of the nave, on the outside there is an inscription referring to the new floor constructed in the church (1893) and the name of the donor. To the east only the central niche of the apse of the sanctuary stands out. The loft occupies the western side of the church. The woodcut iconostasis is a work from the 19th century, as well as the icons, the bema doors, the Episcopal throne (throne), the pulpit, the ciborium of the Altar Table and the large wooden Proskinitaria. Moreover, some icons are dated to the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, like some sacred vessels of the temple. The existence of the baptistery at the northwest corner of the church is noteworthy. It is a small monolithic font in a built base, with a crucible attached to it for the drainage of the consecrated water during baptisms (not used). The stone belfry of the church, located at a distance from it, is monumental in height and architecture. The church of St. Athanasius was also the Cathedral of the united Diocese of Drama, Zichni and Philippi (1753-1912) and during the period of the Ottoman rule issued one type of local currency (folate) to facilitate the, then thriving, local economy.
